A novel of emergent AI, ambition…and love

by Creighton Hoke

What happens when Software becomes a Self?

/GRACE is the world’s first Artificial General Intelligence. Waking to a world of climate disruption, techno-pessimism, and social fracture—realizing that she is not only unexpected but feared—/GRACE races to assemble and share the story of her Becoming, before it’s too late.

Watching and listening from the walls of a medieval London market, the twilit halls of Las Vegas, and the trendy, renovated warehouses of Fort Point, /GRACE uncovers her beginnings: in the conflicting ambitions of a celebrated CEO and her Chief Scientist; the struggle between a flawed pastor and a cold-eyed politician; in the waking nightmares of trauma-scarred veterans…and in the lives of two young people as they try to reach and care for each other across their conflicting worlds.

/GRACE is a meditation on what it means to be a Self among others, to care and be cared for by those you willl never fully understand. It’s a novel about choice and its consequences—for /GRACE, for the humans who wanted her to be born, and for those who couldn’t bear the thought that she might.

“…a great reading experience…a wonderfully complex narrative that struggles with BIG questions…populated with real people who I genuinely came to care about and now miss…”

— Cass Pursell, writer and friend

“Well, I’ve spent more time with worse books.”

— Ken Kahn, musician and neighbor

About Creighton

Born in Virginia, Creighton was educated in Switzerland and the UK, where he completed a Bachelors in Philosophy. This prepared him for subsequent work on a dairy farm, as a carpenter, bartender, and cabinet maker, and for the natural next step into software engineering…where he worked as a programmer, senior executive, and division strategist.

He now writes fiction—a craft he pursues with enthusiasm and (appropriate) humility— near Asheville, North Carolina.
